Can Enamel Discolor or Rust? Facts and Myths

Enamel is known for its luster and longevity. Yet questions sometimes arise: does it discolor in the sun? Can it rust after years outside? Here we list the most important facts.

Enamel does not fade
Genuine enamel never fades. At 800°C, powdered glass fuses with steel to form a top layer that resists UV rays, rain and pollution. The color is in the glass mass itself and remains bright and shiny for decades, even under full sun and in all weathers.

Steel can rust, but not under enamel
An enamel sign has a steel base, but the glass-hard coating completely seals it off from air and moisture. Thus, rusting becomes impossible. Only in cases of deep damage can rust locally.

Enamel is strong and weather resistant
Enamel is scratch and impact resistant and easy to clean. That is why it is used for street signs, facade signs, monuments and industrial applications.

Enamel retains its value
Because of its durability and unique luster, enamel signs are loved by collectors, artists and brands. They often become more than a functional sign: true collectors' items.
