About the artist
Joëlle Dubois (b. 1990, Ghent) explores in her work how social media, digitalization and self-image shape our relationships with others and with ourselves. Her colourful and often explicit paintings depicts bodies in vulnerable, honest postures - not to shock, but to confront the reality of being looked at. She blends humour, irony and softness with sharp observations on identity, gender and online culture.
Joëlle Dubois is represented by Keteleer Gallery (Antwerp) and Thomas Rehbein Gallery (Cologne).
S.M.A.K. - She Has Her Mother's Eyes (2021)
In 2021, for the Friends of S.M.A.K., we produced the edition She Has Her Mother's Eyes a screenprint on enamel, released in a limited edition (20 + 5 a.p.). The work explores the tension between privacy, intimacy and public visibility - a recurring theme throughout Dubois' oeuvre. The edition was entirely handcrafted in our studio, in close collaboration with the artist.
NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein - Future Nostalgia (2023)
In 2023, Joëlle Dubois presented her first institutional solo exhibition in Germany: Future Nostalgia at the NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein. The exhibition brought together works from different stages of her career and explored themes such as femininity, fertility and self-presentation in the digital age. For this occasion, an enamel work was created, perfectly echoing the rich colours and luminous quality of her painting style.
