Since the 1980s, Lilianne has been translating the unique qualities of enamel into powerful visual art. At a time when enamel was primarily used for industrial applications and signage, she was among the first to fully embrace this exceptional material as an artistic medium. In doing so, she helped shape a new way of thinking about enamel: not just as a functional product, but as a fully-fledged art form.
Her body of work ranges from intimate panels to striking monumental façade installations. Over the years, she has consistently demonstrated that enamel is far more than a technical material — it is an expressive medium for public art. Her creations are characterized by monumental formats that enhance the surrounding space, as well as by a harmonious dialogue between material and architecture, always respecting the locations and its context.
New work in Brussels — De Zavel (early 2026)
In early 2026, a new monumental work by Lilianne Vertessen was installed. It can be admired in de Regentschapsstraat in Brussels (De Zavel / Le Sablon).
The installation, with impressive dimensions of 4 meters by 9 meters, comes fully into its own in this special location. It masterfully demonstrates the power of enamel in public spaces: lightfast, low-maintenance, visually striking, durable over time, and at the same time expressive in its color and forms.
